Hostilities and displacement
Since July, clashes between government forces and the Houthis have continued on several fronts, including in the provinces of Taiz, Lahj, Marib, Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda. This has become the largest escalation since a period of relative calm began after the truce in April 2022.
According to the UN and government bodies, about 180,000 people have been forced to leave their homes due to the latest escalation, while thousands more have left for Djibouti. In September, fighting intensified: the Houthis took control of several key areas in the provinces of Al-Hudaydah and Taiz, including the strategic city of Mocha, and reached Mayyun Island near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
