The President of Serbia has once again announced his upcoming resignation
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that he will step down from office a few days after the official announcement of parliamentary elections. He also proposed holding presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously, stating that he is ready to fight for his political party’s victory.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced that he will step down as head of state in the near future. According to him, this will happen just a few days after he officially announces the parliamentary elections. The politician discussed his plans in an interview with TV Pink. He emphasized that he had previously spoken about this scenario and has not changed his position. At the same time, Vučić proposed holding parliamentary and presidential elections on the same day.
According to the Serbian president, he must first fulfill his constitutional duty and announce the date of the parliamentary elections. Only after that, the politician noted, will he officially resign. Vucic emphasized that he is not hiding his intentions and has spoken about this publicly on numerous occasions. “As President of the Republic, I must announce the parliamentary elections; then, a few days will pass, and I will resign. I have already stated this, so that no one can pretend they don’t know about it,” said Vučić.
Separately, the Serbian president commented on the upcoming elections. He stated that he sees no problem with holding both parliamentary and presidential elections at the same time. In his view, such a format is entirely possible. Vucic also made it clear that his political party is ready for the election campaign and expects to win. “Why should I hide? I’m challenging them to both parliamentary and presidential elections. We will fight to defeat them in both,” the head of state declared.
The president also commented on statements by his political opponents regarding high levels of support among citizens. He cast doubt on such estimates and expressed his conviction that the opposition’s actual approval ratings are significantly lower. According to Vučić, his rivals had previously claimed to have the support of the majority of voters; however, in his view, these figures do not reflect reality. “They said they had the support of 70% of voters. Now the question is whether they have even 30%,” said the Serbian president.
The date of the parliamentary elections has not yet been officially announced. It is only after this step, as Vučić stated, that he plans to step down from the presidency. If his plan is carried out, Serbia could hold elections for both a new parliament and a new president at the same time. This will be one of the most important political milestones for the country in the near future. He made these remarks in an interview with TV Pink.
Ruslan Stefanchuk, Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, began his official visit to Serbia with a meeting with the country’s president, Aleksandar Vučić. The two sides discussed the situation in Ukraine, humanitarian cooperation, interparliamentary relations, and European integration.
