Rubio congratulated Ukraine on its 35th anniversary of independence and recalled the negotiations
On August 24, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Ukrainians on the 35th anniversary of Independence and reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty. He also stated that the U.S. continues to work toward a negotiated settlement of the war that will ensure a lasting and sustainable peace.
“On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people of Ukraine on the 35th anniversary of your independence,” the U.S. Secretary of State said.
Rubio recalled that on August 24, 1991, Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union. He noted that 35 years later, the United States reaffirms the long-standing partnership between the two nations.
“Today, 35 years after Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991, the United States reaffirms the long-standing partnership between our two countries. The United States is committed to Ukraine’s sovereignty and continues to work toward a negotiated settlement of the Russia-Ukraine war that will establish a lasting and sustainable peace,” Rubio’s statement reads.
The U.S. Secretary of State also emphasized Washington’s intention to develop economic and security ties with Ukraine. “On this Independence Day, as Ukrainians honor their nation’s history and celebrate their courage, innovation, and resilience, the United States reaffirms its firm commitment to strengthening our economic and security ties and paving the way toward peace and prosperity for both our peoples,” he noted.
Earlier, Zelenskyy congratulated Ukrainians on Independence Day.
As a reminder, on August 24, Ukraine marks 35 years of restored independence. This will be the fifth Independence Day during a full-scale war, but this time the date has another special significance: on the eve of and on the day of the holiday, leaders and representatives of countries that support Ukraine will gather in Kyiv.
To mark the occasion, the prime ministers of the United Kingdom and Luxembourg, the president of Moldova, and the leader of Estonia have arrived in Kyiv.
