Serbian President Vučić resigns ahead of elections — France 24

According to France 24, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić resigned from his post as head of state on Sunday, September 27. This came ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25 and opens the way for him to run for prime minister.

Possible nomination for prime minister

France 24 describes Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party as right-wing populist. Vučić will be able to seek the post of prime minister if his party wins the October parliamentary elections.

Political career since 2014

Vučić has served as either Serbia's prime minister or president since 2014. According to the publication, even before resigning, he announced his intention to leave the presidency in order to formally run for head of government.

Four days before his resignation, Vučić, as Serbia's president, addressed the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The France 24 report, which cites the Associated Press, was published on September 27.
