Germany plans to build naval base in Emden — Anadolu Agency

Germany plans to build a new naval base in the city of Emden in the country’s northwest. A letter of intent for its establishment was signed on October 5 during a ceremony in the city, Anadolu Agency reports.

Fifth major naval base

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the facility would become a major naval base. According to him, Emden’s strategic location will enable rapid access to the North Sea and the North Atlantic. It is also important for cooperation with NATO allies, shared training and operations areas, and joint exercises.

The base in Emden is intended to become Germany’s fifth major naval base and reduce the burden on Wilhelmshaven, currently the most important basing point for the German navy in the North Sea. The Defense Ministry noted that Wilhelmshaven will retain its central role, while the new facility will complement it.

Expansion of the navy

Pistorius linked the expansion of naval forces to growing international threats, the deteriorating security environment, and Germany’s deterrence commitments within NATO. He said that the German navy is currently the smallest in the history of the Bundeswehr, while at the same time having the largest and broadest range of tasks.

According to media reports, the project will require multibillion investments. The base is expected to reach full operational readiness in 2030. Later, up to 2,000 military personnel and civilian employees may be stationed there.
