President Stubb calls for reform of the UN Security Council — YLE News
Finnish President Alexander Stubb, speaking at the UN in New York, United States, stressed the importance of the organization and the need to reform its Security Council. At the same time, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke very little about the UN, YLE News reports.
Different emphases in the speeches
According to YLE's U.S. correspondent Ilmari Reunamäki, the topics of the Finnish and U.S. leaders' speeches on Tuesday were opposite. Stubb focused on the UN's role and the need to renew it, while Trump paid little attention to the organization.
As in his speeches over the previous two years, the Finnish president said there was a need to reform the UN Security Council. He also advocated limiting the power of its current permanent members.

Expectations for the new secretary-general
Stubb expressed hope that the new UN secretary-general, who is to be appointed at the end of the year, would give momentum to reforms. According to YLE, the UN's influence has declined in recent years, as major powers have more often reached agreements bilaterally. The Security Council was described in the report as particularly ineffective.
Finland seeks a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2029–2030. The country also hopes for a stronger role for the UN after the end of Trump's presidential term.
