Nicosia to host annual memorial lecture for surgeon Nicos Ioannou — Cyprus Mail
The Medical School of the University of Nicosia in Cyprus will hold the first annual scientific lecture in memory of orthopaedic surgeon Nicos Ioannou on October 5, 2026. The event will begin at 18:00 in the Discovery Hall at the University of Nicosia.
The lecture series was established with the support of the Ioannou family to honour the doctor’s contribution to medicine and the development of Cyprus’ healthcare system. Cyprus Mail reports, citing a press release.
Lecture on liver cancer
The first lecture will be delivered by Nicos Ioannou’s son, Professor George N. Ioannou, director of hepatology at the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System and professor of medicine at the University of Washington.

His English-language presentation will be titled “The Rise and Fall of Liver Cancer.” The professor will examine changes in the incidence and treatment of liver cancer over recent decades, as well as prevention and current approaches to treating the disease.
Nicos Ioannou’s legacy
Nicos Ioannou was an orthopaedic surgeon and a prominent figure in Cyprus’ healthcare sector. He died on June 26, 2025, at the age of 88.
Ioannou headed the Pancyprian Medical Association and was also the first president of the Health Insurance Organisation. Through the annual lecture, the Medical School of the University of Nicosia intends to preserve his memory and create a platform for scientific discussion of current issues in medicine and healthcare. A reception is planned after the event.
