PDP faction criticizes Tinubu for absence from UN General Assembly — Premium Times Nigeria

In Nigeria, a faction of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by former minister Kabiru Turaki, criticized President Bola Tinubu for his absence from the 81st session of the UN General Assembly and for extending his working vacation abroad. Premium Times Nigeria reports this.

In a statement released by faction spokesperson Ini Ememobong, PDP representatives said that Tinubu should not have gone on vacation amid security problems, economic hardship and a growing burden on the population. They called the president's absence from the meeting of world leaders disappointing and urged Nigerians to demand accountability from him.

Vacation extended

On September 22, the presidential administration said that Tinubu's vacation had been extended by several days. According to his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, the head of state was expected to return to Nigeria by the end of the week.

Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 and arrived in London for a working vacation. After a week in the United Kingdom, he traveled to Paris, where he met with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bolloré. During the trip, the president instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him at some official events.

PDP faction's position

On September 20, Shettima traveled from Abuja to New York to take part in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The PDP faction said that after meetings in Europe, Tinubu should have gone to the United States for the General Assembly instead of extending his vacation.

Ememobong also said that Nigerians have the right to question the president about his performance of official duties. African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar also criticized Tinubu over his vacation and non-participation in the General Assembly, while the presidential administration called the criticism unfounded. The PDP faction urged voters to take the situation into account during the 2027 presidential election.
