The President of Hungary refused to resign despite Madyar's demand

Hungarian President Tamás Szujok has refused to comply with Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s demand that he resign by the end of May. The conflict between the new government and the president has escalated since the election and has already sparked discussions about a possible political crisis, according to Bloomberg.

Hungarian President Tamás Szujók stated that he does not intend to resign despite calls from the new Prime Minister Péter Magyar. He voiced his position in an interview with Index.hu, emphasizing that he acts strictly within the framework of the Constitution. “My oath binds me to the entire political nation, not just to the majority or the minority,” Szujok said.

He emphasized that he sees no grounds for early resignation, even despite Magyar’s claims that he has lost his political legitimacy. According to the president, his mandate remains in effect, and his term expires only in 2029.

Shuyok also expressed doubt that the new prime minister would attempt to remove him from office, stating that such actions could violate European and international constitutional norms.

The conflict escalated following the victory of the “Tisa” party, led by Péter Magyar. The new prime minister publicly stated that the president must resign by May 31 and hinted at using political tools to pressure officials from the previous administration. “You must go. And you will go. You have until May 31,” Magyar wrote on Facebook, commenting on the situation surrounding the president.

At the same time, he accused representatives of Hungary’s old political system of losing public trust and declared his intention to reform state institutions.

In Budapest’s political circles, there is already talk of a possible escalation of the standoff between the presidential administration and the government. Some experts warn that the lack of a clear mechanism for implementing the prime minister’s demands could lead to constitutional uncertainty and institutional tension in the country.
