President Sheinbaum announces new lines of investigation in the Ayotzinapa case — Mexico News Daily

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the preparation of a new report in the case of 43 students from the Ayotzinapa teachers’ college who disappeared in 2014 in the city of Iguala, Guerrero state. The document, containing new lines of investigation, was to be presented on Monday with the participation of Deputy Interior Minister Arturo Medina and the special prosecutor in the Ayotzinapa case, Mauricio Pasarán.

As Mexico News Daily reports, Sheinbaum stressed that the investigation is not closed. According to her, the report contains new avenues of inquiry developed using mechanisms and methodologies that had not been used before. The students’ parents have already been informed about the document’s contents.

The case of the students’ disappearance

The 43 students disappeared on September 26, 2014, in Iguala in southern Mexico. The case concerns their disappearance and suspected murder. Over 12 years, the remains of only three students have been found and officially identified.

Dozens of people were detained in connection with the case, including military personnel, senior officials of the Mexican army, police officers, members of the criminal group Guerreros Unidos, as well as former federal attorney general Jesús Murillo Karam. There have been no convictions in the case, and some suspects have been released from prison. Last month, former Guerrero governor Ángel Eladio Aguirre Rivero was detained in connection with the case.

Warning over Hurricane Polo

During the morning press conference, Sheinbaum also discussed Hurricane Polo’s approach toward the state of Baja California Sur. Civil Protection chief Laura Velázquez said that the Category 3 hurricane was forecast to make landfall in the municipality of Comondú between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Monday.

Residents of the Comondú, Mulegé and Loreto areas were urged to remain at home or in temporary shelters from 2:00 p.m. A second landfall of the hurricane on the central coast of Sonora state was forecast for Tuesday. Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío said that the army, navy and National Guard had been working with state authorities in recent days to prepare for the hurricane.
