Professor Adamu Gwarzo appointed Chancellor of the Hausa Community in Europe
In Paris, France, Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo was appointed Chancellor of the Hausa Community in Europe. The announcement was made by Surajo Jankado, Sarkin Hausawan Turai, during the celebration of International Hausa Day 2026.
Gwarzo is a professor, founder and president of the Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria group. The appointment was recognized by former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
Politicians' congratulations
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, Atiku Abubakar called Gwarzo's appointment well-deserved recognition. According to him, it reflects the professor's long-standing work to promote the Hausa language, culture and identity, as well as support communities in Nigeria and the diaspora.
Abba Kabir Yusuf also congratulated Gwarzo and other Nigerians honored at the event in Paris. In August, the governor described the Hausa language and culture as important components of African identity, unity and development.

International Hausa Day
International Hausa Day is celebrated annually on August 26. It was launched in 2015 by Nigerian journalist Abdulbaki Aliyu Jari as a social media campaign to promote the language. The initiative later developed into an international cultural platform.
The theme of the 2026 celebration was “Our Culture, Our Future.” It was dedicated to preserving the Hausa language, history, traditions and cultural identity for future generations. Organizers reported participation by more than 30 countries, while 26 countries took part in the events a year earlier.
Gwarzo also supports educational and charitable projects through the Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo Foundation, including scholarships and initiatives in education and community development. In 2024, he donated $100,000 to the Islamic University in Uganda during its 33rd graduation ceremony. The new position may help strengthen the cultural identity of Hausa communities in Europe and their ties with Hausa speakers in Nigeria and other countries.
