Major U.S. television networks have stopped jointly covering Trump's events
The five largest U.S. television networks have suspended their joint coverage of events involving President Donald Trump. ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, Fox News, and CNN announced that they will not replace CNN in the White House press pool.
This decision was made after the White House administration banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from operating on its premises.
Under the press pool system, representatives from the five networks take turns accompanying the president to official events, filming footage, and sharing the material with other media outlets. The CNN team was scheduled to be on duty on September 21, but after the network was barred from operating at the White House, the other pool members refused to replace them.
“The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate and independent information about its government. No administration should restrict the media’s activities simply because it does not like the coverage,” the networks said in a joint statement.
The decision means that the television press pool will no longer provide joint coverage of Trump’s events that require the presence of his spokesperson. In particular, CNN was scheduled to cover the president’s trip to New York and his participation in the UN General Assembly, but the other networks refused to take on this responsibility.
The reason was Trump’s executive order banning CNN, MSNBC, and Politico journalists from the White House. The president accused these media outlets of spreading “fake news.” On Saturday, representatives of the three outlets were effectively barred from working on the White House grounds.
