Warning for the president
According to the outlet, participants in the discussions included Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. They spoke with Trump in the Oval Office and the White House Situation Room.
According to the WSJ, the advisers noted that Tehran could continue to resist U.S. pressure. In their view, this could potentially prolong the conflict beyond Inauguration Day in January 2029. The White House did not immediately comment in response to a Reuters request.

Trump’s statement on the timeline of the war
The advisers’ warnings contradict Trump’s public statements. On Wednesday, the U.S. president told reporters before departing for Dallas that, in his opinion, the war would end immediately after the U.S. midterm elections in November. He claimed that Iran was trying to influence the vote but would not be able to resist for long.
Trump’s statements came amid rising oil prices above $100 per barrel due to the resumption of military action between the United States and Iran. The president acknowledged that Americans are paying higher prices and again linked the conflict to the intention to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
