The referendum in Slovakia on the abolition of Fico's lifetime payments was declared invalid

The referendum in Slovakia on the abolition of Fico's lifetime payments was declared invalid

In Slovakia, the State Election Commission declared invalid a referendum that proposed repealing the lifetime payments to Prime Minister Robert Fico, which were introduced following an assassination attempt.

Voter turnout was only 16.13%, falling short of the required minimum of over 50%, making this the tenth failed referendum in the country’s history.

The vote, initiated by the opposition, included a question on abolishing Fico’s payments, as well as on reinstating the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the National Agency for Combating Crime. Although 94.3% of those who voted supported the abolition of the payments, low voter turnout—including zero turnout in three municipalities—nullified the results. The prime minister himself ignored the plebiscite, calling it pointless and accusing opposition forces of attempting to spread hatred and exploit the issue of the attempt on his life.

Aktuality reported this following the vote.

On Saturday, July 4, a nationwide referendum began in Slovakia, in which citizens are deciding on the abolition of lifetime pensions for certain high-ranking officials and the reinstatement of the Special Prosecutor’s Office and the National Agency for Combating Crime (NAKA).
