A British Airways flight was canceled due to the crew's behavior before takeoff

A British Airways flight was canceled due to the crew's behavior before takeoff

British Airways was forced to cancel one of its flights following an incident involving crew members. A few hours before the scheduled departure, airline employees—according to preliminary reports—were socializing at a hotel bar and consuming alcohol.

Following this, several crew members were suspended from duty. As a result of the situation, passengers had to wait for a new flight, and the airline launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

Flight BA254 from Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, to London’s Heathrow Airport was canceled on July 5, disrupting travel plans for about 330 passengers. This occurred because crew members threw a “vodka and beer party.” The publication reports that one of the flight attendants became nauseous, and her colleague lost consciousness. Several British Airways crew members have been suspended from duty pending an investigation.

The incident took place at an all-inclusive oceanfront hotel popular with honeymooners. The hotel’s name has not been disclosed. Guests at the hotel filmed the crew members on video. One of them reportedly said:

“We’re British Airways crew. So what?”

“We expect our crews to uphold the highest standards of conduct and are urgently investigating this incident,” British Airways said.

This unpleasant incident occurred against a backdrop of potential financial difficulties. In May, British Airways’ parent company, IAG, warned that its profits would decline. Due to the conflict surrounding Iran, it expects fuel costs to be approximately 2 billion euros higher than planned.

IAG CEO Luis Gallego stated that the company does not expect “any disruptions during the summer season” in the supply of jet fuel, but warned of rising costs.

Gallego had previously noted that British Airways is adapting to the uncertainty caused by rising fuel prices by taking “necessary measures regarding profitability, costs, and capacity.” According to him, all airlines need to raise ticket prices to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs, which account for about a quarter of their total expenses. The top executive added that the company is confident in its chosen business model.

Following the company’s announcement that its fuel costs would reach 9 billion euros this year, IAG shares fell 4% at the start of Friday’s trading.
