A Republican has initiated impeachment proceedings against Pentagon chief Pete Hagseth
Republican Thomas Massie has filed articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hagseth with the U.S. House of Representatives. He accuses the head of the Pentagon of abuse of office due to the involvement of U.S. military personnel in combat operations against Iran without prior congressional approval. However, the chances of this initiative passing are slim.
Republican U.S. Representative Thomas Massie has introduced a resolution to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hagseth. Massie accuses the head of the Pentagon of abuse of office. In his view, Hagseth allowed U.S. troops to participate in combat operations against Iran without prior congressional authorization. Massie’s resolution was filed as a priority measure. This means the House of Representatives must consider it within two legislative days.
However, this does not mean that Hagseth will actually be impeached. According to Reuters, the chances of the resolution passing are currently slim. At the same time, the initiative itself could create serious political pressure within the Republican Party. Massie is effectively forcing his fellow party members to take a stand on their stance toward a war with Iran and the decisions of the Donald Trump administration.
The Pentagon has already come to Hegset’s defense. “The entire department is united around the secretary’s vision and will continue to work with our service members and America as our top priority,” said Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson.
Massi has long been critical of the war with Iran
Thomas Massie is one of the most consistent critics of U.S. military operations against Iran. He also opposes U.S. aid to Israel. His position differs from that of a significant portion of Republicans in Congress. Massey has repeatedly called for limiting U.S. involvement in the war and demanded that the administration obtain formal authorization from lawmakers for combat operations.
The politician also has a complicated relationship with Donald Trump. In the Republican primary in May, Massie lost to Ed Hallreyn. His opponent was backed by Trump. Hallreyn is a former U.S. Navy SEAL.
Congress has already called for authorization for war
The issue of U.S. involvement in the war with Iran has repeatedly been the subject of debate in Congress. Lawmakers have voted on resolutions calling on Trump to halt military operations unless his administration obtains formal authorization from Congress. Most of these initiatives were supported by Democrats. However, they did not lead to an end to the U.S. military campaign.
Now, the issue of the war could also become a problem for Republicans themselves. The reason is the upcoming midterm congressional elections, which will take place on November 3. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, Democrats currently enjoy higher support among voters for the congressional elections. Forty-four percent of those polled are ready to vote for Democrats, while 37 percent support Republicans.
The political situation is also being influenced by the economic cost of the war. The fighting has caused problems with oil supplies, and gas prices in the U.S. have risen to near-record levels. Donald Trump’s approval rating has also declined since the war began. Consequently, the question of continued U.S. involvement in the conflict is becoming increasingly sensitive for Republicans as the election approaches.
Massi’s initiative does not yet pose a real threat of impeachment for Pete Hagseth. However, it could force members of the Republican Party to publicly explain their position on the war and the Trump administration’s actions. This is reported by Reuters.
