Cyprus employment rate remains at record level of 82.3%
In Cyprus, the employment rate among people aged 20 to 64 stood at 82.3% in the second quarter of 2026. The figure was unchanged from the first quarter and remained at a record level for the second consecutive quarter, Cyprus Mail reports, citing seasonally adjusted Eurostat data.
Above the EU average
Cyprus’ employment rate was 5.9 percentage points higher than the European Union average, which stood at 76.4% from April to June. Across the EU, the figure rose by 0.1 percentage points compared with the first quarter, when it was 76.3%.
In the third quarter of 2025, Cyprus’ employment rate was 81.3%; in the fourth quarter, it was 81.8%; and in the first quarter of 2026, it reached 82.3%. Eurostat defines this indicator as the share of employed people in the total population of the relevant age group.

Changes in other EU countries
Between the first and second quarters of 2026, employment increased in 14 EU countries. The largest rises were recorded in Portugal and Malta, at 0.6 percentage points in each country. In Greece, the figure increased by 0.5 percentage points, and in Latvia and Slovenia, by 0.4 percentage points.
In four countries, including Cyprus, the employment rate remained unchanged. It declined in nine EU states, with the largest decrease recorded in Austria, at 0.4 percentage points. Lithuania and Sweden recorded declines of 0.3 percentage points.
The rate of labour market slack in the EU among people aged 20 to 64 was 11% of the extended labour force in the second quarter. This indicator, which includes people with an unmet need for work, including unemployed people, was unchanged from the previous quarter.
