Robert Fico Calls for an Emergency EU Summit Due to Rising Fuel Prices
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico called on the European Union to hold an emergency summit due to the rapid rise in fuel prices. He stated that, in his opinion, the EU is not responding sufficiently to the impact of the oil crisis on member states, according to Reuters.
EU member states are left to deal with the economic consequences of rising oil and fuel prices on their own.
The Slovak prime minister also criticized the approach that forces governments to find funds to offset high fuel prices by cutting social spending.
He stated that the demand to cover additional expenses at the expense of pensions and healthcare is evidence of the European Union’s “cynicism.”
Robert Fico believes that the issue of rising fuel prices requires a joint solution at the EU level. He called for an emergency summit to address the consequences of the oil crisis.
His statement came amid a significant rise in fuel prices on global markets. Reuters reports that countries in Europe and other regions are facing rising energy costs and related inflationary risks.
At the same time, the Slovak government plans to take its own measures to curb fuel prices.
Recently, Robert Fico has also stepped up his criticism of EU and NATO policies regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine and relations with Moscow. Reuters notes that the Slovak prime minister opposes providing military aid to Ukraine and supports maintaining relations with Russia.
On September 19, Fico stated that some Western politicians allegedly seek to provoke a war between NATO and Russia. According to him, the West is allegedly attempting to prolong the confrontation with Moscow after the strategy of supporting Ukraine failed to achieve its stated goal.
At the same time, this is Robert Fico’s own assessment and assertion, not an established fact. European leaders, particularly representatives from France and Poland, have instead warned of the threat of Russian hybrid attacks.
Fuel prices have risen sharply across Europe: as of September 22, gasoline and diesel cost more than 2 euros per liter in a number of countries.
Prices for fuel and lubricants for private vehicles in the European Union rose by 23.8% in August compared to August 2025.
