Russia rejects El Al’s application for flight to St. Petersburg — Jerusalem Post

Russia, an aggressor state, has rejected Israeli airline El Al’s application to open a route between Israel and St. Petersburg. The Jerusalem Post reported this, citing Israeli television channel N12.

According to N12, the Russian side likely refused El Al in order to “punish” Israel. This is linked to the fact that Russian airline Aeroflot was not allowed to land in Israel due to U.S. and European sanctions against Russian companies.

Reason for the refusal

El Al tried to launch the new route after flights between Tel Aviv and Moscow were suspended in June. This route was suspended due to the security situation amid Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Flights between Israel and Russia

At the same time, another Russian airline, Red Wings, continues to operate flights between Israel and Russia, N12 reported.

In June, Ukrainian drone attacks on Russia led to the suspension of departures from all major Moscow airports. More than 500 flight delays were recorded at the time. Kyiv stated that the strikes were a response to an attack that damaged a nearly millennium-old monastery in the city.
