Russia accused Japan of obstructing a peaceful resolution to the war
Moscow stated that Japan’s new sanctions allegedly push back the prospect of a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Tokyo of “unfriendly” actions and stated that Russia may take appropriate measures. She did not specify what those measures might be.
On October 2, Japan announced a new package of restrictions against Russia. It includes the freezing of assets belonging to 33 Russian companies and nine individuals, as well as restrictions on 35 vessels.
In addition, Tokyo expanded its export restrictions. Japanese authorities explained the new measures by citing the situation in Ukraine and the need to coordinate actions with international partners.

In 2026, Japan faced a record rice surplus following a severe shortage that had occurred a year earlier due to heat, drought, and rising demand. The government has already begun buying rice from the market to replenish depleted reserves and stem a further decline in prices.
