A Russian frigate fired signal flares at a Danish military helicopter
A Russian warship fired two signal flares toward a Danish helicopter during an incident in international waters. One of them flew very close to the helicopter.
The incident occurred while the Danish military helicopter was carrying out a routine mission to observe and photograph the Russian ship. The frigate was in international waters near the Danish town of Gedser.
According to the Danish command, the Russian ship fired two signal flares toward the helicopter. Such devices are typically used to attract attention or send signals; however, in this case, one of them flew close to the Danish helicopter.
After the flares were launched, the crew of the Danish helicopter aborted the mission and left the area.
Danish military authorities emphasized that the helicopter did not return fire. The incident is being viewed as dangerous behavior by a Russian military vessel toward a NATO aircraft.
According to the Danish side, the Russian frigate was in international waters and did not violate Denmark’s territorial waters. At the same time, the use of signal flares near a military aircraft created a dangerous situation.
