Linda Mwananchi backs Sifuna as Kenya presidential candidate — Nation Kenya

In Kenya, the political movement Linda Mwananchi has officially endorsed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as a candidate in the 2027 presidential election. The decision was made during a meeting of the movement’s leadership, which was missed by Siaya County Governor James Orengo. He had previously stated his intention to seek the movement’s presidential nomination.

Orengo’s absence

Representatives of Linda Mwananchi said that Orengo apologized for his absence due to the illness of a member of his family. They insisted that missing the meeting did not indicate a split within the movement. At the time the Daily Nation article was published, Orengo had not responded to a request regarding the reasons for his absence and his attitude toward Sifuna’s endorsement.

Orengo had previously advocated for a proper candidate selection process, stressing that opposition unity should not exclude competition among contenders. Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale said that the meeting participants agreed on Sifuna’s candidacy despite Orengo’s absence.

The movement’s further plans

Those attending the meeting included Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya, Senators Richard Onyonka and Godfrey Osotsi, as well as former Meru County Governor Kawira Mwangaza. The movement’s leadership said it seeks to unite political forces into a broader opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to Khalwale, participants also tried to persuade Owino to join a political campaign on the same platform as Sifuna. At the same time, Owino has registered The Mwananchi Party, which he plans to use to contest the Nairobi governor election. Linda Mwananchi said it would unveil its electoral political platform in early October; the movement had previously announced a presentation for October 3.
