Sandu warned of growing threats posed by smuggling amid the war in Ukraine
President Maia Sandu has stated that the risks to Moldova’s national security have increased significantly amid the war in Ukraine. According to her, criminal groups involved in arms, drug, and human trafficking have become more active in the region.
This was reported by the Moldovan publication IPN.
During a meeting of the Supreme Security Council, the head of state emphasized that hostilities near the borders have created new challenges, and the country itself is increasingly being used as a transit hub for illicit flows.
“We are seeing a growing threat of arms and drug smuggling. Criminal networks are trying to take advantage of the situation in the region to expand their trafficking,” Sandu emphasized.
She also noted that the increase in drug trafficking is often linked to the shipment of prohibited substances in postal packages, which complicates control and liability issues.
According to the president, once the war in Ukraine ends, the risks may only increase, as pressure on the region will intensify. In this regard, the government plans to strengthen the security system and invest in modern control technologies.
Among the proposed measures are strengthening border surveillance and introducing mandatory scanning of all postal packages. Sandu emphasized that the key priorities remain strengthening borders and expanding cooperation with international partners to maintain stability in the country.
Earlier, following a meeting of the National Security Council, Moldovan President Maia Sandu announced the country’s intention to join the international coalition of resolute nations to assist Ukraine.
