SBS Transit reviews urinal layout at Farrer Park MRT station — Channel NewsAsia

Singapore transport operator SBS Transit is reviewing possible changes to the layout of urinals in the men's restroom at Farrer Park MRT station following online criticism. As Channel NewsAsia reports, photos circulated online show six urinals installed close to one another.

Complaints about lack of space

Facebook and Reddit users pointed out that urinals positioned opposite each other are placed too close together. Under such conditions, it is uncomfortable for two people to use them at the same time, while other visitors find it difficult to pass between them.

In response to a CNA query on Thursday, September 3, SBS Transit spokeswoman Grace Wu said the operator was aware of the issue and was studying options to improve the layout. According to her, any work would need to be carefully planned to cause as little disruption to passengers as possible, so the changes may take time.

Expert assessment

World Toilet Organization founder Jack Sim said on Facebook that he personally visited the restroom to verify the published photographs. He noted that it is difficult for people to stand at urinals opposite each other without their backs touching.

Sim told CNA that he initially assumed the images might have been digitally edited, but after visiting the station he became convinced that the layout was real. In his view, the design and construction of public infrastructure usually go through several stages of approval. He also stressed the need for redesign, including ensuring sufficient passage space for visitors using the urinals at the far end of the restroom.
