Ghana’s transport associations suspend fare increase
In Ghana, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) have suspended plans to increase public transport fares. The current approved fares will remain in force nationwide until further notice.
Consultations with the government
The decision was made after representatives of the transport organizations met with the Ministry of Transport on September 8, 2026. Carriers had previously submitted a proposal to increase fares as part of their 2026 review, MyJoyOnline reports.
According to the associations, the actual impact of fuel costs on carriers’ operations requires further assessment. They noted that the government’s diesel fuel intervention of 2 Ghanaian cedis per litre must be considered together with the proposed fare increase before a final decision is made.

Review of cost components
The Ministry of Transport, GPRTU and GRTCC have established a joint group to review all cost components. According to the transport organizations, its work should ensure a fair possible fare adjustment that takes into account the interests of carriers and passengers.
GPRTU and GRTCC instructed drivers, transport station managers and vehicle owners to adhere to the current fares until further notice. They also called on passengers and representatives of the transport sector to remain calm, maintain order and cooperate during the consultations.
