The SBU detained a Russian artillery spotter who was directing fire against Ukrainian Armed Forces positions in the Kharkiv region
The Security Service’s Counterintelligence Directorate detained another informant for the aggressor country in the Kharkiv region. The suspect was directing enemy fire at Ukrainian Defense Forces positions located 10 km from the front line in the Vovchansk direction. The day before, another spotter coordinating Russian strikes on Ukrainian Armed Forces positions in Kharkiv was detained.
Among the main “targets” of the Russian forces were the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ tube artillery, which keeps enemy assault groups under fire control.
According to operational data, once the enemy obtained the coordinates of Ukrainian troops, it planned to launch precision strikes against them using super-heavy guided aerial bombs.
SBU officers acted preemptively and apprehended the suspect “red-handed” while he was conducting a reconnaissance mission near the front lines in his own car under the guise of a fishing trip.
Simultaneously with the operation to detain the informant, measures were taken to secure the locations of the defenders in the Kharkiv region.
According to the case file, an unemployed resident of the Chuhuiv district was responsible for coordinating the shelling; he came to the attention of Russian intelligence officers while searching for “easy” money on Telegram channels.
It was established that, following instructions from the Russians, their accomplice drove around the area near the line of contact in his own car and recorded the deployment locations of Ukrainian troops.
At the scene of his arrest, a smartphone was seized from the informant, which he had used to gather intelligence and maintain contact with Russia.
The traitor is being held in custody without the right to bail. He faces up to 8 years in prison.
An investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime and to determine whether the enemy spotter’s actions may be additionally classified as high treason.
