Senator Ossoff criticized Trump for waging war against Iran

Georgia Democratic Senator John Ossoff sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump at a rally in Atlanta on August 16 for waging a war by the U.S. and Israel against Iran. He stated that the White House had misled the public about the war and treated service members as “pawns.”

According to The Guardian World, Ossoff highlighted the fact that American sailors have been aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln for nearly nine months. He noted that concerns are growing on the ship regarding service conditions and the mental health of the crew. According to the publication, Trump said last week that the sailors had not been deployed “for nearly long enough.”

Ossoff also stated that the president is more focused on personal matters than on fulfilling his official duties, and accused him of depleting U.S. ammunition and oil reserves. These statements are the senator’s assessments.

In addition, Ossoff accused Trump of using the presidency for personal gain. He cited the imposition of tariffs, Trump’s post on Truth Social urging people to buy stocks, and the subsequent repeal of those tariffs. According to the senator, these events caused a significant market surge and may have been linked to the president’s desire to make money.

Ossoff stated that Trump is not eliminating corruption in American politics but is restructuring the system to his own advantage. The senator is running for reelection in Georgia in November. The Guardian World reports that he leads the Republican candidate, Representative Mike Collins, in the polls, and his remarks have also fueled speculation about a possible run in the 2028 presidential election.

Ossoff supports a ban on U.S. members of Congress and their families trading stocks. The “Ending Trading and Holdings in Congressional Stocks Act” passed the preliminary committee review stage in July 2024, but the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate has yet to bring it to a vote.
