In Warsaw, more than 40,000 residents have already expressed support for a referendum on the early termination of the terms of office of the capital’s mayor, Rafał Trzaskowski, and the entire city council.

The campaign’s organizers aim to put the issue of the city leadership’s early resignation to a vote by Warsaw residents.

The initiative group Stołeczna Operacja Referendalna began collecting signatures on July 30. Within the first four days, 15,000 people signed the petition. On Monday, Wilk reported that the number of signatures had exceeded 40,000.

“Warsaw is waking up. Already, more than 40,000 Warsaw residents have signed the petition calling for a referendum on the resignation of the capital’s leadership,” he wrote.

The signature drive will continue until September 28. To call a referendum, support from 10% of Warsaw’s voters—approximately 132,000 residents—is required. The exact number of signatures needed to hold the vote will be determined by the election commissioner.

The organizers plan to step up the signature-gathering campaign in the coming weeks. According to Wilk, there will be more volunteers in orange vests working on the streets of Warsaw, as well as more signature collection points.

For the referendum to be considered valid, at least three-fifths of the voters who cast ballots in the last local elections must participate. That is approximately 450,000 voters.

This is not the first attempt to hold a referendum in Warsaw on the early termination of the mayor’s term. In October 2013, residents of the capital voted on the resignation of the then-mayor, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz. That referendum was declared invalid due to low voter turnout.

Maciej Wilk, one of the initiators of the referendum, reported this on social media platform X.
