US Democratic senators expect vote on Saudi Arabia deal — Jerusalem Post

In the United States, Democratic senators said they expect a vote by December 13 on an agreement by President Donald Trump’s administration to exchange nuclear energy technologies with Saudi Arabia. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post. According to the publication, the Democrats made this assessment on Friday.

Democrats’ initiative

Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley worked to secure a vote together with four other Democratic senators. According to him, the consideration would give the Senate an opportunity to fulfill its legally mandated duty to examine the agreement and express its view on its potential impact.

Nonproliferation concerns

Merkley said that senators would be able to assess whether the arrangement could contribute to a nuclear arms race in the Middle East. He also pointed to the potential risk of weakening efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons worldwide.

As the publication notes, Merkley’s position was set out in a release first reported by Reuters.
