Serbia threatens sanctions over detentions in Kosovo

Serbia reacted strongly to the detention of five ethnic Serbs in Kosovo, stating that all those involved in the operation could face punishment. The incident has already become yet another escalation between Belgrade and Pristina, where the sides are once again trading mutual accusations of pressure and political provocations. This was reported by N1.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dačić stated that everyone involved in the detention of the five Serbs on Kosovar territory will be “held accountable and punished in accordance with Serbian law,” effectively promising a harsh response from Belgrade.

According to N1, in the town of Gračanica, Kosovar law enforcement detained five ethnic Serbs, including heads of health and education institutions, who are suspected of violating voters’ freedom of choice and attempting to influence the electoral process.

Pristina claims that sufficient statements and evidence have been gathered to indicate illegal actions aimed at undermining the election campaign, and that this was the basis for the detentions. In response, Ivica Dačić called the incident an “anti-Serb act” and emphasized that the Serbian Ministry of the Interior is “firmly committed to ensuring that all those responsible for this anti-Serb act are punished to the fullest extent of Serbian law.”

It is also noted that the Kosovo police operation took place against a backdrop of political tension and statements by officials regarding possible pressure on voters in the region, where Serbs constitute a significant portion of the population, which only exacerbates the conflict between the parties.
