Comparison in Asia

The publication notes that Taiwan's result is still significantly lower than those of India, the Philippines and Malaysia, which it places in Asia's “700-point club.” Taiwan also trails South Korea, whose average score, according to the publication, is approaching 700 points.

The article also notes that the average score of Taiwanese university students was again lower than the average result of final-year senior high school students — 655 points. Taipei Times links this to the fact that many universities pay less attention to language courses and shift English for first-year students from compulsory to elective subjects. The publication also critically assesses the promotion of teaching subjects in English, or English-Medium Instruction, while language courses are being reduced.
