Shinhan Bank reports data leak affecting 25,000 customers — Korea Herald
In South Korea, Shinhan Bank reported a leak of the personal data of about 25,000 customers as a result of a cyberattack. According to Korea Herald, the leak occurred on Wednesday, and the country’s financial regulator has launched an on-site inspection of the bank.
What data was leaked
The bank said that the breach exposed data on customers’ borrowings, their annual income, names and phone numbers. Shinhan Bank also announced emergency measures to minimize the potential damage from the incident.
According to the publication’s sources, the hackers, who are currently suspected of being based abroad, used advanced artificial intelligence tools in their attacks. Experts suggested that the bank was likely not a specific target and may have been affected by indiscriminate AI-driven attacks on vulnerable online platforms.

Regulator’s inspection
South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service sent a team to investigate the leak. The investigation is expected to last several months.
Shinhan Bank formed a response team and said it had completed security measures. These include blocking access from external IP addresses and suspending the services affected by the incident.
