Sweden to Halve the Cost of Monthly Public Transportation Passes — Aftonbladet

Sweden's right-wing government is set to officially announce its plans to significantly reduce monthly public transportation fares

The influential newspaper Aftonbladet has learned of these intentions from Swedish officials.

This move is Stockholm’s response to the massive energy crisis triggered by the war in the Middle East.

According to the government’s plan, the financial burden on passengers will be cut in half. Monthly fares will be reduced by half from the beginning of July through the end of December.

The Kingdom is allocating significant budgetary funds for this social initiative, and the government is setting aside approximately seven billion kronor, or just under 700 million euros, for this purpose.

The main goal of Swedish officials is to encourage citizens to change their daily transportation habits in order to save fuel.

The country’s economic leadership aims to reduce domestic consumption of petroleum products by the private sector.

The Ministry of Finance has directly appealed to car owners, urging them to temporarily give up their personal vehicles in favor of buses and trains.

“If you don’t need to use a car or it isn’t necessary for work, we urge you to use public transportation more often,” said Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson.

This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to minimize the impact of the international crisis on the domestic market.

Prior to this, the government presented a support package worth 17.5 billion kronor (about 1.7 billion euros) to lower gasoline and diesel prices.

This package is a response to rising energy prices caused by the war in the Persian Gulf. The government had previously discussed the need for additional support for public transportation.

In Sweden, the captain of the detained oil tanker Jin Hui, which may be linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” has been arrested. The Chinese national is suspected of using forged documents and violating maritime regulations regarding the vessel’s seaworthiness.

Earlier, Swedish police officially arrested the vessel Caffa, which had been held in the country’s territorial waters for two months.
