Sweden expels Iranian embassy employee over activity incompatible with Vienna Convention

Sweden’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs summoned Iran’s ambassador and demanded that an employee of the Iranian embassy in Stockholm leave the country. The ministry cited activity incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations as the reason.

Swedish Foreign Ministry decision

The Swedish ministry did not specify the nature of the activity for which the embassy employee was asked to leave. The Vienna Convention defines the rules and privileges of diplomatic missions.

The Swedish authorities’ decision was reported by the Jerusalem Post. The publication notes that the official’s expulsion followed an April CNN report on Iran’s alleged use of criminal groups in Sweden to attack Israeli and Jewish sites.

Information on attacks in Stockholm

CNN, citing the Swedish Security Service SÄPO, reported that at least four known attacks or attempted attacks in 2023 and 2024 targeted the Israeli embassy in Stockholm. They involved shootings and an attempted explosion; minors were among the suspects.

Swedish police and prosecutors stated that criminal groups manipulate these young people and act on behalf of Iranian intelligence units.
