Chinese leader Xi Jinping is unlikely to visit New York to attend the UN General Assembly during his planned trip to the U.S. in September, where he is set to meet with President Donald Trump. Politico reports this.
According to Politico, Xi plans to spend three days in the U.S. and meet with Trump on September 24. The publication cites four people familiar with the Chinese leader’s plans.
It had previously been speculated that Xi might take part in UN General Assembly events in New York as part of his trip to the U.S. However, according to sources, he does not plan to stay in New York to address the UN General Assembly.
The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet commented on this information.
Xi’s meeting with Trump is expected to be the highlight of the visit. The U.S. president invited the Chinese leader to visit the U.S. during his trip to Beijing in May.
During the spring meeting, the two sides sought to stabilize relations, which had deteriorated due to trade disputes, technology issues, and Taiwan. Although no major agreements were reached at that time, Xi called the meeting “historic” for bilateral relations.
