Sibiga discussed with Rubio ways to pressure Russia into starting negotiations
On June 16, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the G7 summit and discussed steps that could compel Russia to begin peace talks. According to the Ukrainian side, the discussion focused on increasing international pressure on Vladimir Putin.
Sybiga said he congratulated Rubio on the signing of the agreement between the U.S. and Iran and expressed hope that it would bring stability to the region and energy markets.
“I reiterated President Zelenskyy’s expectation that this agreement creates an opportunity to resume U.S.-led peace efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war against Ukraine,” he said.
Additionally, according to the foreign minister, they discussed ways to advance the peace process.
“I shared Ukraine’s view on the steps needed to finally bring Putin to the negotiating table,” Sibiga said.
Separately, he informed Rubio about Putin’s strikes on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and other civilian, cultural, and historical sites.
“They demonstrate that Moscow is waging a war against faith, heritage, and Ukrainian identity,” the diplomat emphasized.
The minister also told Rubio about the latest successes of the Ukrainian military on the front lines and the need for continued sanctions pressure on Russia.
“We see a growing momentum toward peace through strength and rely on the decisive leadership and engagement of the United States,” Sibiga concluded.
