The Estonian Defense Forces will consolidate their medical services into a single battalion

The Estonian Defense Forces plan to centralize their medical services within a single medical battalion by the end of the year. The reorganization is intended to simplify the command structure and distribution of responsibilities, improve the management of medical capabilities, and enhance the combat readiness of the troops, ERR News reports, citing the General Staff of the Estonian Defense Forces.

Medical units, which previously operated within various structures, will come under the centralized command of the medical battalion. The General Staff expects this to ensure clearer organization and more efficient use of available capabilities.

Lieutenant Colonel Indrek Olveti, Chief Medical Officer of the Estonian Defense Forces, emphasized that the changes do not involve closing medical centers or reducing the number of medical personnel. According to him, the changes will primarily involve restructuring the management framework so that existing medical capabilities are better coordinated and can more effectively support the troops.

In peacetime, the battalion will conduct medical examinations and provide primary medical care to personnel, particularly conscripts, as well as provide medical assistance during exercises and training. In the event of a conflict, the unit will be responsible for providing first aid and comprehensive treatment to the wounded in the rear, medical evacuation to medical stations and hospitals, and, if necessary, transport for treatment outside Estonia.

The new battalion will report to the Estonian Defense Forces Support Command, which reports directly to the Commander of the Armed Forces. The Command provides logistical and medical support to Estonian units both domestically and during overseas deployments, coordinates the reception and departure of NATO allied forces, and is responsible for strategic military transport in Estonia.
