Singapore to expand unit pricing pilot — Channel NewsAsia

Singapore will gradually expand its pilot programme for displaying unit prices in supermarkets from 1 October. More retail operators, new categories of everyday goods and online stores will be included. This was reported by Channel NewsAsia.

Prices per kilogram and litre

Programme participants will indicate the cost of products per unit of measurement, for example, per kilogram or litre. This approach is intended to make it easier for shoppers to compare the cost of products from different brands and in different package sizes.

The expanded pilot will cover, among other products, flour, milk, butter, snacks, soups and sauces. Don Don Donki and RedMart will join the programme. NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Prime Supermarket, Don Don Donki and RedMart will begin on 1 October, while Cold Storage and Giant will join from 1 November.

Online stores will join the programme for the first time

For the first time, unit price displays will be used in online stores. Sheng Siong and RedMart will begin showing such prices for selected categories from 1 October, while other operators will gradually introduce this on their platforms.

The first stage of the pilot ran from September to December 2025 and covered the NTUC FairPrice, Sheng Siong, Prime Supermarket, Cold Storage and Giant chains. The Competition and Consumer Commission (CCS) and the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) said that the expansion of the pilot is based on positive consumer feedback from the first stage of the programme.

CCS engaged a market research company to collect shopper feedback during the new stage in order to take it into account in future decisions on unit pricing. CASE President Melvin Yong also noted that consumers can compare unit prices of essential goods through the Price Kaki app.
