Trump's Special Envoy Believes Greenlanders Love the U.S. – Politico

Jeff Landry, the White House Special Envoy to Greenland, stated after his first official visit to the island that the local population is eager to establish closer ties with the United States. Despite the American diplomat’s optimistic statements, the actual political context indicates a significant cooling of relations between Washington and the Greenlandic authorities

This is reported by Politico.

In an interview with Fox News, Jeff Landry emphasized that Greenlanders have a positive attitude toward the U.S. and want to see greater American involvement in the island’s economic and security processes. The special envoy directly linked his trip to the geopolitical crisis in the Middle East and the military conflict with Iran. According to Landry, events in the Strait of Hormuz demonstrate Greenland’s strategic importance as an alternative and secure source of energy resources for the West. The diplomat noted that the island’s potential allows for the export of up to 2 million barrels of oil per day, which could drastically reduce Europe’s energy dependence and strengthen America’s position.

However, behind the curtain of high-profile statements lies a deep crisis of trust. Politico observers emphasize that the official authorities in Nuuk received the American envoy with extreme restraint. The leadership of this autonomous Danish territory currently shows no desire to push for integration with the U.S. The main reason for the diplomatic chill was recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who publicly revived his long-standing idea of annexing or buying Greenland this winter. Washington’s imperial ambitions sparked sharp outrage both in Denmark and among the Greenlanders themselves, provoking mass protests by the local population against the backdrop of the opening of a new U.S. consulate.

U.S. Special Envoy Jeff Landry arrived in Greenland on May 18. He stated that the purpose of the trip was to establish contacts, engage with local residents, and familiarize himself with the situation on the ground, denying any political motives related to potential plans for the island.

U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland Jeff Landry stated that the country’s economic future and prosperity allegedly depend to a large extent on the decisions of U.S. President Donald Trump
