Putin's Special Representative Kirill Dmitriev has traveled to the U.S. for talks on Ukraine

Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian president’s special representative for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries, has traveled to the U.S. for the first time since last December to hold talks with representatives of the Donald Trump administration. 

According to reports, Dmitriev is scheduled to hold consultations in New York with Steve Whitcoff, Jared Kushner, and other White House officials. The talks will take place during the UN General Assembly.

These consultations are expected to be a continuation of the September meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin, Steve Whitcoff, and Jared Kushner at the Kremlin.

A Reuters source reported that the main purpose of Dmitriev’s visit to New York is to continue the dialogue between Russia and the U.S.

According to the agency’s source, topics for discussion will include:

• economic cooperation between Russia and the U.S.;
• energy issues;
• a resolution to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Additionally, the talks are taking place against the backdrop of discussions regarding a possible limited ceasefire.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that Moscow and Kyiv had expressed interest in the idea of a limited ceasefire, which could apply to grain and energy infrastructure facilities.

During previous meetings with Steve Whitcoff and Jared Kushner, Kirill Dmitriev discussed sanctions against Russia with the American side. In particular, they discussed the possibility of suspending restrictions on Russian oil transported by sea.

This time, Dmitriev’s trip to the U.S. comes a week after Donald Trump signed the law on the so-called “hellish sanctions.” The document provides for the possibility of imposing tariffs of up to 100% on countries that purchase Russian oil.

Thus, Dmitriev’s upcoming talks in New York will take place against the backdrop of simultaneous discussions on economic cooperation, energy, sanctions, and possible ways to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Two sources familiar with the preparations for the meetings told Reuters about this.

As a reminder, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in New York on September 23.

Earlier, Donald Trump stated that Russian dictator Putin is ready to meet to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. According to the U.S. president, both sides want this.
