The U.S. has announced a military operation in the Strait of Hormuz
Washington announced the launch of Operation Freedom, which involves the deployment of aircraft and approximately 15,000 troops to ensure unimpeded navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
This was stated in a CENTCOM announcement on social media platform X.
To carry out the president’s order, the Pentagon is deploying unprecedented forces. It is reported that 15,000 service members will be involved in the mission. Air support will be provided by over 100 modern aircraft and missile-equipped destroyers.
An interesting detail: Trump spoke in his statement about assisting neutral ships and a “humanitarian gesture,” but the CENTCOM statement refers to “restoring free navigation” without specifying which ships exactly.
“On May 4, U.S. Central Command forces will begin supporting Operation Freedom to restore freedom of navigation for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz,” the military statement notes.
Earlier, the U.S. military struck the Touska, a ship flying the Iranian flag that was attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz despite the blockade.
