The Pentagon is considering possible scenarios for strikes against Iranian defense facilities in the event of a breakdown in the ceasefire. The targets in question are located near the Strait of Hormuz, as well as in the southern parts of the Persian and Omani gulfs. At the same time, sources note that such strikes are unlikely to help reopen the sea lanes.
This is reported with reference to CNN sources.
The Pentagon is also considering “dynamic targeting” of Iran’s capabilities in the aforementioned regions, which includes attacks on small high-speed attack boats, mine-laying vessels, and other asymmetric assets that have helped block key waterways and use them as leverage against the U.S.
The publication notes that Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and parts of the Persian and Omani gulfs has caused massive fluctuations in the global economy, threatening to undermine Trump’s efforts to reduce inflation in the U.S. CNN emphasizes that this occurred despite a ceasefire that began on April 7 and halted U.S. military strikes.
It is reported that although the U.S. military did attack Iranian naval forces, a significant portion of the first month of bombing was focused on targets located far from the Strait of Hormuz, which would have allowed strikes deep into Iran.
At the same time, new U.S. plans call for a much more concentrated bombing campaign around strategic waterways.
The news agency also emphasizes that a significant percentage of Iran’s coastal defense missiles remain intact despite the bombing. Tehran also has numerous small boats that can be used as platforms to launch attacks on ships, complicating U.S. efforts to open the strait.
However, military strikes around the strait are unlikely to immediately reopen the waterway on their own, several sources, including a senior shipping broker, told CNN.
