The U.S. is preparing scenarios for a large-scale strike against Iran: a ground operation and airstrikes
The U.S. is considering the possibility of launching a large-scale military strike against Iran if diplomatic negotiations reach an impasse. This includes both a ground operation and massive airstrikes. A final decision has not yet been made, but preparations are already underway.
This is reported by Axios, citing U.S. officials and sources familiar with internal discussions.
The U.S. Department of Defense is considering several options for a so-called “final strike”—a decisive military operation that could end hostilities.
Among the key options being analyzed in Washington are:
- a strike or blockade of Kharg Island—the main hub for Iranian oil exports;
- operations on Larak Island, which is strategically important for controlling the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz;
- actions regarding Abu Musa Island and adjacent territories;
- intercepting or blocking tankers transporting Iranian oil.
Separately, the possibility of a ground operation inside Iran to gain control over stocks of highly enriched uranium is being considered. An alternative to this could be massive airstrikes on nuclear facilities.
Escalation will become more likely if negotiations fail to yield results. The situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global oil exports passes, plays a particularly crucial role.
President Donald Trump has not yet made a final decision. The White House emphasizes that scenarios involving a ground operation remain “hypothetical.”
However, according to sources, if negotiations fail, Trump is prepared to take decisive action. The first step could be a strike on Iran’s energy infrastructure.
In response, Tehran has already warned of possible large-scale actions in the Persian Gulf region.
Analysts warn that some of the scenarios being discussed in Washington may not end the conflict but, on the contrary, lead to its prolongation and escalation.
Thus, the further development of the situation will largely depend on the results of diplomatic efforts and actions by both sides.
As a reminder, U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson stated on March 25 that the “Epic Fury” military operation against Iran is nearing its conclusion.
White House spokesperson Caroline Levitt stated on March 25 that the U.S. would deliver an unprecedented strike against Iran if Tehran did not immediately cease its resistance.
Prior to this, the Iranian leadership rejected the U.S. proposal for a “framework” of a potential agreement to end the war.
