US may delay arms sales to Taiwan — South China Morning Post

The United States is considering delaying the announcement of major arms sales to Taiwan until after the APEC and G20 summits. The South China Morning Post reported this, citing several sources.

Possible postponement

According to the publication, the announcements could be postponed at least until the conclusion of the November APEC summit in Shenzhen, China. Consideration of a possible postponement is taking place ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington, scheduled for next week.

Pause until the end of the year

SCMP sources also said that there is a significant likelihood that the postponement will be extended until the end of the year. According to them, this is related to a planned bilateral meeting.

The publication's sources described the possible decision on the timing of the announcement as a compromise between US President Donald Trump, supporters of a tougher policy toward China in Washington, and Taiwan lobbyists.
