Syria and IAEA agree on cooperation programme for 2026–2031 — Anadolu Agency
In Vienna, Austria, the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency signed a Framework Programme for Syria for 2026–2031. Commission Chairman Mudhar al-Akla said that cooperation with the IAEA should facilitate the transfer of technologies to Syria for the peaceful use of atomic energy.
As Anadolu Agency reports, citing the Syrian agency SANA, the document covers seven areas: nuclear and radiation safety, health and nutrition, food and agriculture, energy planning and nuclear knowledge management, industrial applications, water resources, and the environment.
Cooperation programme
According to al-Akla, Syria’s participation in the 70th session of the IAEA General Conference was an important stage in the country’s technical cooperation with the agency. He noted that the signed agreement gives this cooperation new momentum for the direct transfer of nuclear technologies to the fields of healthcare, agriculture, water supply, energy, and radiation safety.

The commission chairman also stated that the roadmap signed with the IAEA should help turn the rescission of the decision on Syria’s non-compliance with its obligations into development projects for citizens and the restoration of public service sectors.
Safeguards decision
On September 9, the IAEA Board of Governors suspended the effect of its decision on Syria’s non-compliance with nuclear obligations under the safeguards agreement related to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. According to the source, this occurred after the relevant technical and legal requirements had been met.
In addition, according to SANA, Syria, through its Atomic Energy Commission, joined the signing in Vienna of a framework document on the Asia-Pacific research reactor network. Representatives of 12 countries also took part in the ceremony, supported by the IAEA. The network provides for the exchange of knowledge and experience, strengthening safety and security standards for research reactors, developing human resources, and conducting joint scientific research.
