US aims for trilateral nuclear arms control deal including China
The administration of US President Donald Trump announced that it will only pursue nuclear arms control treaties involving three countries: the US, Russia, and China. State Secretary Marco Rubio stated that for any 21st-century nuclear agreement to be legitimate, it must encompass all three nations.
?t=1680">YouTubeRubio dismissed arguments that China’s much smaller nuclear arsenal compared to Russia and the US makes its involvement irrelevant. He emphasized that China is fully capable of matching the other two powers and is actively moving in that direction. Without China’s participation, Rubio noted, no deal would be reached.
With the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) expiring on February 5, 2026, the need for a new trilateral agreement among these nuclear powers has become increasingly urgent.
