The U.S. has extended the sanctions exemption for Russian oil for another 30 days

The United States has decided to extend the sanctions exemption for Russian oil that had already been loaded onto tankers and was at sea for another 30 days.

This was reported by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

This refers to the extension of a temporary waiver that President Donald Trump’s administration introduced a month ago amid the escalating conflict with Iran and rising global energy prices.

Under current conditions, the U.S. permits transactions involving Russian oil if it was already in transit by sea at the time the restrictions were imposed. The previous exemption expired on April 11, but it has been extended until May 16.

At the same time, the U.S. administration had previously stated publicly that it does not plan to extend such exemptions from sanctions on Russian oil.

As a reminder, issues related to Ukraine, including the intensification of sanctions pressure on Russia, will be discussed at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council. The meeting will take place next week in Luxembourg.

Ukraine and a number of countries have supported the EU’s new sanctions against Russia.
