The U.S. is demanding security guarantees from Iran in the Strait of Hormuz and is threatening consequences
The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has demanded that Iran publicly confirm that the Strait of Hormuz remains open and guarantee an end to attacks on commercial vessels.
According to sources, the message to Tehran was conveyed both directly and through regional intermediaries.
These demands were prompted by Iran’s attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, which led to a new escalation, several exchanges of fire, and threatened the current ceasefire. Following this, Donald Trump announced the de facto suspension of the ceasefire.
Officials in Washington emphasize that Iran’s unwillingness to officially commit to ensuring the safety of shipping raises doubts about its readiness to comply with a potential nuclear agreement.
“We want them to publicly declare that they will stop firing on ships and to acknowledge, either directly or at least indirectly, that they messed up. We’re working on that right now. We expect the Iranians to declare… that all channels in the strait will be open and that passage through them will be free,” said one U.S. official.
Another U.S. administration official warned that failure to comply with this demand would have serious consequences.
“If they don’t take that position, it won’t be the best day for them,” the official noted.
The White House also reported that Donald Trump is leaving room for diplomatic negotiations on a new nuclear deal with Iran, but that time is limited.
At the same time, the U.S. side is already preparing alternative scenarios in case an agreement with Tehran cannot be reached.
This was reported by Axios, citing U.S. officials.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran had approached Washington with a request to resume the negotiation process. According to him, the U.S. side agreed to continue the dialogue.
