Maia Sandu nominated Vasile Tofan for the position of Prime Minister of Moldova

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has officially nominated businessman Vasile Tofan for the position of prime minister. The nominee now has 15 days to present the new government’s program, form the Cabinet of Ministers, and secure a vote of confidence from Parliament.

Following his official nomination, Vasile Tofan stated that he is aware of the responsibility placed upon him.

“It is a great honor for me to be here. I do not consider this an achievement; it is a great responsibility, and I am deeply moved by this responsibility. I will do everything in my power to live up to the expectations of the Moldovan people. I hope to get to work as soon as possible to improve the lives of Moldovans,” he emphasized.

According to the nominee, the government’s main priorities in the initial phase of its work will be to restore and strengthen public trust, revive the economy, and improve public administration, policy, and the business environment.

“I am a team player, and I am here to help build strong teams together. All honest, courageous, and hardworking people will find an ally in me. Everything we do, we do to bring Moldova into the EU as quickly as possible,” Tofan emphasized.

The appointment of the new candidate followed the resignation of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu, who unexpectedly announced his resignation on July 3.

According to local media reports, the resignation may have been linked to a series of high-profile corruption scandals that have recently emerged in Moldova. In particular, it was revealed that the head of the State Agency for Civil Aviation Safety (MOLDATSA), appointed by the current government, had used a forged college diploma and a fake pilot’s license.

In addition, on July 2, law enforcement officials detained the state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, who is suspected of accepting a bribe.

This was reported by TV8.
