The Ukrainian Ambassador Honored the Victims of the Volhynia Tragedy in Warsaw

On the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Volhynia Tragedy, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, laid a wreath at the memorial in Volhynia Square in Warsaw. He stated that Ukraine supports the search for historical truth and the continuation of dialogue with Poland.

The Ukrainian diplomat joined the events commemorating the victims and, on behalf of Ukraine, paid tribute to the victims of the tragedy. Vasyl Bodnar emphasized that the memory of the victims must remain an important part of relations between the two countries. “For us today, it is important—and it is our duty—to honor this memory, to remember history, but also to work toward ensuring that the future is free of problems, that the future is shared, within a common European home,” the ambassador said.

According to him, Ukraine and Poland must work together to honor each victim with dignity and to establish all the circumstances of the tragic events. “Ukraine advocates for establishing the full historical truth, continuing search and exhumation efforts, and fostering professional dialogue among historians,” Bodnar stated.

He noted that a complex history should not hinder future cooperation between the countries. “Ukraine and Poland have a complex history, but they also share a common future. That is why we must jointly honor the memory of the victims, uncover the truth, and build relations based on respect and trust,” the diplomat emphasized.

Bodnar added that the issue of commemorating the victims of the Volhynia tragedy requires not political disputes, but the calm work of historians, search teams, and representatives of both countries. He stressed that continuing search operations and dialogue between Ukraine and Poland remain crucial for mutual understanding between the two nations. This was reported on the Polish Embassy’s website.

Ukraine has no plans to halt search operations for the graves of Polish victims of the Volhynia tragedy. Oleksandr Alferov, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, stated that such efforts remain an important part of the historical dialogue between Ukraine and Poland.

On the National Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Volhynia Tragedy, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk addressed the public, calling on citizens to preserve historical memory, identify the names of all those who perished, and build a future based on truth and solidarity.
